Must See: Montana Fall Road Trip - 2022

Wild Goose Overlook - St. Mary's Lake - East Side Going to the Sun Road - Glacier National Park Fall is like the blissful sunset of a beautiful day. The colors of the year blazing into brilliant reds and oranges. The weather holding out the last vestiges of warmth. And all the world seems to be curling up over a cozy mug of hot chocolate in the waning light. Just before the cold night of winter settles in. I love fall. And everything that it brings with it. Especially, I love the mountains in fall. How they can go from striking to moody in a matter of moments. And, (even) most especially, I love Glacier National Park in the fall. It is spectacle for the senses. Bright colors. Cool breezes. Altitudes and reflections. Hiking. Grazing moose. Scampering bears.  Head out highway 2 toward West Glacier and you are astounded by the sheer mountainous walls marking the entrance to the park. But, before you do that, my wife reminds me in one of those step on the brakes sort of ways, you absol

MidWeek Edit: Flowers on a Branch

Here in Midweek Edits, I take a look back at a random BKP favorite and re-imagine it. We here at BKP are getting excited for cherry blossom festival 2014. As an appetizer for this year's peak bloom, I once again went back to the cherry blossoms from 2012 to take another look at this photo.

The color hues and saturation in the original are phenomenal. I didn't want to mess with them much the first time around, but felt a little kick would really draw them out. Here's the original edit.

You will immediately notice the richer blues, oranges, yellows, and reds. This is perfect for a colorful display that really brightens a room. But, it may be too rich for some tastes. I love the SOOC version, but I think it pales next to the vibrancy of this one. So the question became how can I re-envision this one without losing the delicate feel and the spring overtones. Because of the distinct difference saturation and color make between the SOOC and the original edit, I decided to dial in back a bit and let the texture and composition of the photo stand in its own right. First, I applied a custom Lightroom preset I call Sepia B&W which dials up the exposure by +0.6, adds some recovery, and slightly raises the brightness, contrast, and clarity. To get a more earthy tone, I bumped the Highlights, dropped the Lights, and lightened the Shadows a full +100. I gave it my personal blend of B&W conversion and drew out greens in the highlights and light maroons in the shadows with Split Toning. Finally, I gave it a touch of vignette. Here is the result:
