Must See: Montana Fall Road Trip - 2022

Wild Goose Overlook - St. Mary's Lake - East Side Going to the Sun Road - Glacier National Park Fall is like the blissful sunset of a beautiful day. The colors of the year blazing into brilliant reds and oranges. The weather holding out the last vestiges of warmth. And all the world seems to be curling up over a cozy mug of hot chocolate in the waning light. Just before the cold night of winter settles in. I love fall. And everything that it brings with it. Especially, I love the mountains in fall. How they can go from striking to moody in a matter of moments. And, (even) most especially, I love Glacier National Park in the fall. It is spectacle for the senses. Bright colors. Cool breezes. Altitudes and reflections. Hiking. Grazing moose. Scampering bears.  Head out highway 2 toward West Glacier and you are astounded by the sheer mountainous walls marking the entrance to the park. But, before you do that, my wife reminds me in one of those step on the brakes sort of ways, you absol

2020's Top 5

This has been a year to remember. In some very strange ways. But, whatever the suffering, there was also strength. Whatever the discouragement, there was also hope. Whatever the darkness, there was also beauty.

As we consider the many, and varied, facets of this departing year, we here at BKP are taking a look back and giving thanks for many of the amazing, beautiful, and strange moments that we captured.

Here are our top 5 favorites.

1. Sunrise over the Grand Tetons.

This was the single moment that made thousands of driving miles and lack of sleep all worth it. Relive the capture here.

2. COVID Strikes DC

On March 11, everything shut down. Even the nation's capitol. Life changed so suddenly that it was impossible to even grasp what a new normal would look like. However, signs of a quickly changing times popped up everywhere.

Here, a man wearing a mask visits the Lincoln Memorial.

See more of how life changed here.

3. A Bull Elk in Full Velvet

Even as we went into forced hibernation - hoarding toilet paper while wearing pajamas to Zoom calls - wildlife went unbothered. Free from the distraction of constant visitors in our national parks, they reclaimed broad swaths of territory. Yet, such unmolested reign led to some dangerous encounters as people, escaping cabin fever, once again returned in hordes.

Even then, this majestic bull elk in full velvet couldn't be bothered.

Story: when I was capturing this image, a tourist ran right passed me to within a couple feet of the bull. I don't typically call out stupidity. Unless it threatens lives. I called out his stupidity. Respect the bull.

4. Building a Home Studio

Yes, we at BKP got stir crazy, too. So... we built a home studio in our 700 sq. ft. basement apartment.

And then took some pictures!

5. Getting Creative with Adobe Photoshop: Double Exposure

Idle handles make fretful minds... or incredible art.

On a day when I was truly bored and terribly cooped up, I took a massive bison from Yellowstone and smashed him together with the Grand Tetons.
