Catching Some Air - Aviation Photography

It's not often that I have extra time these days, but every once in a while a few minutes pop up. Now, pair that with the right location and photographic fun ensues. Take these for example. I had some time to burn on a recent trip to Alaska waiting for a late-night return flight out of Anchorage where there is a publicly accessible area just past the end of the runway - similar to Gravely Point at DCA. MidWeek Edit: In the Market

Here in Midweek Edits, I take a look back at a random BKP favorite and re-imagine it. This week's image comes from a shop in the Arab markets in Jerusalem. This is one of my favorites because of the humanity it shows - regular people going about everyday business. There is so much vibrance in this picture - beyond the color. I love the moment it captures. You can gets prints of this MidWeek Edit and others here.

In the Market - SOOC
The SOOC image has a significant dynamic range too broad for my Canon 40D and EF-S 10-22mm. You can see a significant loss of detail in the shadows and the highlights. The original edit was all about reigning this in. To do that, I used an Adobe Lightroom preset I call Brick Wall which bumps the exposure by +0.4, increases brightness, drops blacks, and bumps vibrance and saturation. In the tone curve, it bumps highlights and lights, and reduces darks and shadows. Finally, I dropped the saturation and luminance on Oranges a bit, and added in the EF-S 10-22mm lens profile with this as the result.

In the Market - Original Edit
You can see the imagine feels very dense. On the re-imagine, I wanted to make it feel more like you are standing right there - the way your eye would truly see it. To do so, I started with shifting the light balance to 2950 to compensate for the yellow in the lights. Next, I bump the exposure by +0.5, cranked up the recovery to bring in the detail around the bare lightbulbs, and added some fill light to bring in the foreground. I pushed the clarity to 63 to draw out the finer details in the products, and desaturated slightly because of the distracting and clashing colors. A simple touch on the tone curve to drop shadows and preserve the feel of the night shot, lens profile correction, and finally a bit of vignette to keep the eye from wondering out of the edges of the image. And, voila:
